What Is Satin?

Satin is a type of fabric that’s often found in bridal dresses, nightgowns, lingerie, and other feminine apparel. It can be made from silk, polyester, nylon, or a combination of different materials.

It’s woven in a satin weave (sometimes called a twill or plain weave). This is a complex weave structure that moves weft intersections across several warp yarns before going under at least one warp thread and starting the cycle over again.

Historically, satin was made from silk but nowadays it’s usually made from a blend of synthetic fibers like polyester. While they may not feel as soft as natural silk, synthetic satins are cheaper and they tend to hold up better over time.

When shopping for satin fabrics online, it’s important to know the different types of satin so you can select the right fabric for your project. Some are more drapey than others and some have a different surface finish.

Common satins include Lucent, Monroe, Messaline, Sultan, and Slipper. Each type of satin has its own unique characteristics and uses.

Satin paint resists chips and scratches better than flat paint and slightly better than eggshell paint, making it ideal for areas that get a lot of wear and tear, such as bathrooms. It also doesn’t show scuffs in high-moisture environments, such as playrooms and kitchen walls.
