Satin is a soft, shiny fabric that feels luxurious against the skin and looks stunning in clothing, hats, accessories, and bedding. It isn’t just available in silk, though; it can also be made from a variety of other fibers, such as cotton or polyester. Some satin products, like bed sheets or handkerchiefs, are advertised as being made from natural silk satin while others are marketed without any mention of a specific type of satin. It’s important to know how satin is made before purchasing, as it can help avoid disappointment when it comes time to use the material.
While it’s commonly associated with silk, satin isn’t technically a material, but rather a weave. Silk and other materials can be woven into satin by using the satin weaving process. Therefore, it’s possible to have satin products that aren’t made from silk but are instead woven from other natural or synthetic fabrics.
There are a few different types of satin weaves, including a crepe back satin and a duchess satin. The former is two-sided, with a smooth, shiny face and a duller, ribbed, crepe back. The latter is one-sided and relatively stiff. Duchess satin is typically dyed in solid colors and used for bridal wear because it holds its shape well.
While some satins are able to be machine washed and tumble dried, it’s recommended that you hand wash most of them. Fill a basin or sink with cool water and add a mild detergent. Gently agitate the fabric and rinse thoroughly, being careful not to wring or twist it. Finally, gently squeeze out the excess water and let the satin dry flat on a clean towel.
